CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Tennessee’s free hunting day is coming up soon. It’s a day when Tennessee residents can hunt for free, without a license.

Free hunting day is Saturday, August 26. This is also the opening day of squirrel season.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) provides a free hunting day annually, in hopes to increase the public’s interest in hunting.

Residents will be exempt from hunting licenses and wildlife management area (WMA) permit requirements on Saturday. However, hunter education requirements are not waived on free hunting day.

The TWRA says many WMAs will be open with public access on free hunting day. But hunters must still ask for permission to hunt on private lands.

During squirrel season, hunters can harvest up to 10 squirrels per day. Squirrel season ends on March 15, 2024.

For more information, visit the TWRA’s website.
