Chattanooga gas prices still climbing

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Last week, average gas prices around Chattanooga rose 9.1 cents per gallon.

On Monday, August 21, 2023, gas prices averaged $3.43 per gallon in Chattanooga, according to GasBuddy.

Plus, gas prices are 27.1 cents per gallon higher than this time last month.

They are even higher than this time last year, too. Last year at this time, gas prices averaged $3.27 per gallon in Chattanooga.

However, national gas prices remained steady in the last week. The average national gas price is $3.82 per gallon.

But the national average rose 26 cents in the last month, despite being 4 cents lower than this time last year.

Diesel is slowly rising as well, sitting at an average of $4.29 per gallon in the U.S.

“The national average price of gasoline eked out a small decline over the last week, with some states seeing a drop of 5-10 cents per gallon, while new issues in some states, like Arizona, have caused prices to jump notably in others,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With California facing a deluge of water from Tropical Storm Hilary, some level of refinery problems that could impact gasoline prices could arise, and with eyes on a more active Atlantic, the next few weeks will bring additional volatility to what motorists can expect at the pump.”

Note also that under the Biden administration, Chattanooga gas prices have seen a steady increase. On August 21, 2020, Chattanooga’s average gas price was $1.83 per gallon. On August 21, 2021, Chattanooga’s average gas price was $2.72 per gallon.

Since 2020, the average Chattanooga gas price on this date has shot up $1.60 per gallon. It has nearly doubled.
