Playstation to end physical disc production in 2028
DALTON, GA. (WDEF) — Sony made an announcement that’s sent waves through the gaming community.
The maker of the PlayStation announced that they will no longer sell physical disk copies of games starting in 2028.
This means that all games will have to be purchased digitally on Sony’s own online storefront.
This would effectively kill the used game market, leaving gamers and game stores without a way to trade and sell games.
Jason Bailey Store Co-Owner Battleground Games and Comics told us, “I don’t know if the next generation has been moving more digital and that’s kind of the reason for, I guess going this direction so they’re saying more digital sales and less physical sales. I think it’s going to save Sony money. The bad part about it is people when they purchase a game they can’t trade it in when they’re done so you’re essentially locking in for life on that game.”
There is currently no word on whether Xbox will follow in PlayStation’s footsteps.
