Bill Supporting Guns In Parks Proving Divisive
Republican Rep. Mike Harrison is promoting a "pro handgun in parks" bill which passed by voice vote in the House Civil Justice Committee this week.
National organization, Moms Demand Action say they are deeply concerned by the thought of guns in parks and say they will campaign until the end in order for it not to happen.
Kathleen Chandler Wright, Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense,"Our legislators are simply just out of touch with the majority of the constituents and the people of Tennessee, I think most Tennesseans want common sense legislation, we want safe places to take our children and families."
Kathleen has concerns about the proposed legislation which she feels could cause headaches for schools.
"Logistical problem for public schools, a lot of them have their sporting events at public parks and then the school events are meant to be gun free."
Chattanooga Sports League runs more than 40 sporting events across the Scenic City.
Their organizing committee feel the legislation could have an impact on the safety of players and their families.
Tommy Travers, Chattanooga Sports League,"We have to look after not just the employees of the CSL but also the people who are playing at CSL, I would feel a little concerned if I know people can openly carry guns at some of the parks we are at".
However Travers added, he understands that some athletes, especially those competing or training late at night may carry firearms for security.
Tommy Travers, Chattanooga Sports League,"If those people feel safer and people in our league can bring that and if it makes them feel safer it may make a balancing act".
The proposed bill is just one of twenty that Tennessee legislators are reviewing focusing on firearms.
