Portion of I-75 southbound shut down after serious wreck
UPDATE:
In an update from authorities, a woman accused of shoplifting had caused the crash on I-75 on Tuesday.
Chattanooga police have charged 29-year-old Haleigh Gentry-McCord for the chase that caused the interstate pile-up.
They said an officer had spotted her vehicle from a store robbery which occurred earlier in the day. But she then fled on I-75 near the East Brainerd Road exit.
According to police, she changed lanes and caused the five-vehicle pileup.
First responders took both Gentry-McCord and a passenger to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Another person in one of the other vehicles also suffered minor injuries.
Police have charged Gentry-McCord with the following charges:
- 3 counts of aggravated assault.
- 4 counts of reckless endangerment.
- Criminal impersonation.
- Evading arrest.
- Driving on revoke, suspended or cancelled license.
- 2 counts of improper passing.
- Failure to maintain lane.
- Seat belt law violation.
- Reckless driving.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A serious wreck happened on I-75 southbound on Tuesday evening. The entire southbound interstate is currently shut down at mile marker 3.4.
The accident happened just before 6:30 p.m., according to Chattanooga police.
There are at least two serious injuries. Traffic investigators are currently on scene as well.
Police are re-routing traffic onto East Brainerd Road from I-75 south until further notice.
Drivers should avoid the area if possible.
