More to the Story with Staley: Seniors Unprepared

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A natural disaster can strike at any time, and we’ve had our share of those here in the Chattanooga area.

Being prepared for such an event is important, but a recent survey indicates one segment of our society is not prepared.

A disaster can strike at any time. Hurricanes, floods, wildfires. They can be life taking, and certainly life changing.

But a recent survey by AARP shows that one segment of our society is vastly unprepared for a catastrophic event: older adults.

Less than one-third surveyed have an emergency plan, but there are reasons for that.

“The reality is that one in five older people are isolated. And in many cases, they are far from the resources they need,” said AARP Executive Director Tom Kamber. “And many older people have mobility and medical concerns. That makes it more challenging.”

One of the problems for our seniors is the world of technology. That survey indicates only one in ten older people have embraced the modern tools of technology. For example, 57% of our seniors do not have an emergency charger for a mobile device.

However, experts say things are getting a tad better.

“We’re finding that older people are now starting to understand that technology is a powerful tool. For example, making sure your documents are digitally backed up,” Kamber explained.

The survey shows that older people regarding this subject are more vulnerable than one might initially believe. Experts say caregivers and family are very important in helping the elderly get up to speed with preparedness and finding the right place for information.

“We set up a quiz here at AARP. It’ll direct you to the appropriate resources,” Kamber added. “For example, we have links to FEMA and the Red Cross. It’s the best place to get started.”

AARP says the ultimate goal is to get our senior citizens fully on board with being prepared. So, when disaster strikes, everybody has a plan.
