Dalton Police Tackle Tire Dumping
Many are reused as flower beds or melted down, but dozens are left like this on the side of the road.
Bruce Frazier, Dalton PD,"When we did our tire detail Tuesday, they recovered tires from 22 different sites, some of those places were along Hamilton Street they found some along MLK Blvd and some other areas but really scattered throughout the town".
Frazier added that illegal dumping of tires also poses a major environmental risk.
"It’s an eye sore for the people that live there or drive by there, it’s also a public safety hazard because water collects in tires and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry disease and breeding grounds for rodents and all sorts of things".
Fines of between 200 and 1000 dollars can be handed out.
Dalton tire companies have welcomed the crackdown on the illegal dumping of tires in their city, saying they go to great lengths to dispose of their tires and feel it’s insulting to all of their efforts.
Jacky Sims, Helton Auto Dalton,"We actually have to pay to have the tires hauled off to be recycled we have to pay for a trailer to haul them to Atlanta".
Helton Tires tell News 12 they also follow federal and state guidelines on tire disposal.
Jacky Sims, Helton Auto Dalton,"To do this you have to have a license to do this we are running into a bunch of illegal dumping in Dalton they will just pull up and dump them anywhere they can, side of roads and other people’s property".
If caught violators can also be ordered to clean up the area they polluted and face jail time.
