UPDATE:

TVA reported at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday that customers could return to normal power usage.

They said the availability of power returned to normal levels after reaching an all-time high the same morning.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) reported having an all-time record for peak power demand Wednesday morning.

They said their peak power demand was 34,526 megawatts with an average temperature of 4 degrees. This is the highest electric load in all of TVA’s 91 years.

This record was recorded at 9 a.m. on January 17.

The previous record was set in August 2007, with 33,482 megawatts.

TVA says the extreme cold is raising the demand for electricity.

However, they added that the electric grid is stable. Power generating facilities are performing well.

They are asking the public to reduce energy consumption during these temperatures, though.

TVA also thanks their employees and local power companies for working to keep everyone safe and warm.
