NerdWallet Study Shows Gender Wage Gap Closing, Chattanooga Leading The Way
Courtney Miller, NerdWallet Writer and Economist,"Women in Chattanooga earn about 100.3% of what men earn, we also see Chattanooga showing up on our cities where the wage gap changed the fastest in a nine year period between 2005 and 2013."
Kim White CEO of River City Company says she’s not surprised by the results.
"It’s really a community that wants to embrace people that make a difference in it, no matter gender or ethnic background, I do think we have been one that has been very accepting of all different sorts of people".
The Chamber of Commerce say some Chattanooga companies have worked hard to give women an equal footing.
Rob Bradham, Chattanooga Area Chamber,"You know we have got a lot of good headquarter operations in the insurance sector, that’s a sector that women do particularly well at, of course the previous CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield was a woman".
A UTC Economics professor feels education is one of the driving forces in bringing women into higher paid roles and management positions.
Bruce Hutchinson, UTC Economics,"Going to college, going into graduate school, so getting professional qualifications that means they are going to go into professional jobs, that makes in terms of what we are talking about, studies that show wages over time to myself, questionable".
Cities in Florida, Texas and California also topped the charts when closing the gender pay gap.
Birmingham Alabama and Wilmington North Carolina also showed major surges in wage gap equality.
The research was conducted using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
