Cleveland police arrest man for shooting co-driver over cellphone

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) — Cleveland police have arrested a man for shooting his co-driver at a gas station.

According to the Cleveland Police Department, the shooting happened at 11:30 p.m. on Friday, February 9.

Police say out of state residents Djamel Mahouz, 35, and Jontrell Riley, 23, were co-drivers of a transport truck. They were stopped at a Pilot gas station at 281 Pleasant Grove Road.

Cleveland police explained that the two started arguing and Riley was accusing Mahouz of stealing his phone. They add that a “scuffle broke out” and Riley shot Mahouz once with a 9mm Glock pistol.

Then, authorities said Mahouz went into the gas station and collapsed from his gunshot wound to the chest. Police say he is now in critical condition.

The police department said officers quickly apprehended Riley.

Authorities are charging Riley with attempted second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
