Ocmulgee Mounds could be home to Georgia’s first national park
MACON, Ga. (WDEF) — Georgia lawmakers from both parties are banding together to push through the first national park in the state.
Georgia’s two democratic senators and many House republicans, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, announced the new bill on Wednesday.
It will designate the Ocmulgee Mounds near Macon as Georgia’s first national park and preserve.
The Ocmulgee Mounds Park and Preserve Establishment Act will make areas surrounding the mounds in middle Georgia as part of the park and preserve as well.
The mounds were built around 900 AD and humans have been living there for around 12,000 years.
The Muscogee (Creek) tribe lived there before they were forcibly removed as part of the Trail of Tears.
The mounds have also been a rich archaeological site. Politicians have been trying to create a park there for the last five years.
