Vanderbilt Poll: Tennesseans support IVF treatment regardless of their abortion views

In vitro fertilization became an issue when an Alabama court ruling temporarily banned them

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) – The semi-annual Vanderbilt survey is out this week, tackling a wide range of issues across Tennessee.

The poll finds Tennesseans are deeply split over abortion rights, with a slight trend toward pro-choice since the Dobbs ruling last year.

But that divide does not extend to another reproductive issue: in vitro fertilization.

82% approve of IVF treatments that allow couples to get pregnant and that goes across party lines.

The poll also asked Tennesseans if they think that IVF has moral implications.

  • 58% said it is not a moral issue.
  • 29% believe it is morally acceptable.
  • 10% felt IVF is morally wrong.

“This widespread support should give the state legislature and the governor a reason to be more active on the IVF issue,” poll co-director John Geer said. “It’s clear that voters, regardless of party affiliation, want this option to remain legal.”
