Murray County Schools to Reopen After Labor Day, Extending Summer Break for Students

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) Why on Earth would students go back to school during the hottest days of the year?

It’s an uncomfortable fact of life for most school districts in the Tennessee Valley, but not Murray County.

Their kids are still enjoying Summer.

“I guess it works out well for our football team. We have some players here now, and they’re able to practice in the morning. Often, the heat index prevents them from being on the field in the afternoon, so morning practices give us an advantage. Our band and cheerleaders, involved in outdoor sports, can also take advantage of practicing in the mornings since we’re not in school at that time,” said principal of North Murray High School.

The North Murray High School football team already has two games under its belt.

So how do they beat the heat?

“Yes, especially after Labor Day, when we start later in the evenings, the sun goes down and the breeze picks up, leading to better overall practices,” said students.

In the meantime, parents and students got acclimated to the new school year through an open house on Wednesday night.
