Lookout Mountain Incline Railway remains closed following blazing fire
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway will continue to remain closed following the tragic events of the weekend.
The Chattanooga Fire Department reported to the scene early Saturday morning where a brush fire was quickly spreading throughout the mountain. Ground support and a Type 1 Helicopter was able to fight and drop water on spots throughout the weekend.
We were able to speak to Jeanne Crawford who has worked at Mountain Memories for 83 years with her shop itself standing strong for 96 years and counting. She was told to evacuate but couldn’t leave behind this store that has been in her family for generations. Many others were handed these last-minute heartbreaking decisions on whether to stay or leave their beloved homes and stores for the sake of their own safety.
Now dealing with the aftermath of the damages, according to CARTA (Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority), the “cable system has been severed and will require months to remanufacture due to its special nature” and “both the rail system and cross timbers have sustained damage, though the full extent remains unknown”.
CARTA has already “initiated key steps towards restoration including the replacement plan for the cables being underway, timber suppliers being on alert to provide necessary materials, and rail manufacturers on standby.”
With over 10 acres of damage reported, the fire is now 100% contained. Crews are still reportedly on the scene to continue to monitor the fire and ensure overall safety for nearby homes and businesses.
The National Park Service and local Fire Departments have stated that they are unsure if the fire was human-caused or not, but they are actively investigating the cause.
