TVA meets record-breaking power demand amid winter freeze
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) met record-breaking electricity demand during the coldest temperatures of the season.
On Wednesday morning, TVA’s system reached an all-time high demand of 35,319 megawatts at 8:00 a.m. CT, with temperatures across the region averaging 11 degrees.
TVA maintained power supply for the 10 million residents across seven southeastern states during these conditions.
In fiscal year 2024, TVA allocated $430 million to strengthen its power infrastructure.
These investments included upgrades to its natural gas, coal, and hydroelectric generating facilities.
“We have continued to harden our system for the weather and learn from each extreme cold event. Our procedures are enhanced every year to ensure the power system remains stable during extreme temperatures. This achievement is a testament to our dedicated employees who work tirelessly to provide reliable power and keep 10 million people safe and warm. We also thank residents and businesses across the Tennessee Valley for their cooperation in conserving power during Wednesday’s peak hours. Together, we made history.”
-Greg Henrich, TVA senior vice president of Grid.
According to TVA, their forward-looking approach extends beyond immediate weather challenges.
With the region’s population growing at three times the national average, TVA is undertaking a $16 billion initiative to expand its energy generation capacity and infrastructure.
This includes adding 3,500 megawatts of generation, 1,400 megawatts of which were completed last year, alongside securing 800 megawatts of solar energy.
