Preventing Frozen Pipes in Freezing Weather

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – With freezing temperatures continuing to grip the region, one of the biggest concerns for homeowners is protecting their pipes from bursting.

It only takes a few hours of sub-freezing temperatures for pipes to freeze and burst, causing thousands of dollars in damage. But the good news is, with a little preparation, you can avoid this winter disaster.

Experts are recommending homeowners to insulate exposed pipes, drip their faucets, open cabinet doors, and keep their heat on.

Matthew Kennedy, a local plumber, told News 12 that “if the pipes are exposed, keeping the water running is the best way to insulate them. It’ll keep the wind off of the pipes, maybe some heat trace to keep the pipe warm.”

But what should you do if a pipe does freeze or burst? Here are the immediate steps to take to minimize damage. Turn your water off, call a plumber, document the damage, and use caution with electricity.

Taking these precautions now could save you from a major headache and expense later.
