UTC Hosts Economic of Sports Panel

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – UTC hosted its Economics of Sports event this afternoon where professionals broke down how sports drive local economies, shape college athletics, and adapt to new financial challenges.

This afternoon, Economic experts gathered at UTC for an enterprise event for the Economics of Sports, a deep dive into the financial forces driving modern athletics.

Speakers at this afternoon’s event examined critical issues from the financial impact of sports on Tennessee’s economy to the growing influence of media rights, sponsorships, and athlete compensation.

For Chattanooga, sports aren’t just entertainment, they are businesses.

Local sporting events bring tourism dollars, create jobs, and boost the city’s economy. But as the industry changes, so do the financial pressures.

When major sporting events come to the area, the city sees a significant uptick in hotel stays, restaurant traffic, and overall business activity.

Another hot topic at this afternoon’s event? The future of athlete compensation. With new NIL rules allowing college athletes to profit from endorsements, the financial landscape of college sports is shifting.

As sports continue to evolve, one thing remains clear: whether it’s ticket sales, sports gambling, TV contracts, or athlete branding, the business of sports is booming—and understanding its impact is more important than ever.
