Gas Leak Leads to Fire Behind Highland Plaza Businesses

Hixson (WDEF) Smoke from the fire behind Highland Plaza this morning could be seen for miles.

But the fire was actually behind the stores.

Fire officials report that it started with a paving crew working behind the buildings.

A milling machine accidentally hit a one and a half inch gas line.

When the gas hit the machine, it erupted into flames.

One of the workers got singed, but did not have to be taken to the hospital.

The flames spread to the milling machine and a dumpster nearby.

But firefighters kept it away from the businesses, until Gas Company crews were able to shut it off.
