Yellowhorse Powwow Celebration honors a member of the local Native American community
Tammera Hicks with Native American Services of Tennessee gets ready for a special Powwow this April and dedicates the celebration to her husband who passed away in 2019.
COLLEGEDALE, Tenn. (WDEF) – Learn and experience Native American culture with the upcoming Yellowhorse Powwow Celebration at Founders Hall at The Commons in Collegedale. The event is on April 5 and 6 with $10 admission for adults. Children under 5 get in free.
The community and family oriented event will feature competitive dancers from across the country, Native American drums, and different vendors from across the nation that celebrate and honor the Native American culture.
“I think a lot of us grew up hearing maybe some of these different Native American names, but being able to see a whole celebration really puts it into perspective and get your to celebrate the whole group,” Tammera Hicks with the Native American Services of Tennessee says.
Hicks dedicates this celebration to her husband, Jimmy Yellowhorse. He’s a well-known wood carver and Native American flute player. “After his death, I kind of took a few years, but this one has been brought back and it’s in honor him and his celebration,” Hicks said.
As part of the event, they are introducing a new event which is a stomp dance. The stomp dance is like a church prayer and it will be done in memory of people who have past recently.
Hicks encourages everyone to dress comfortably and to bring chairs. Everyone is invited to the event and encourages to join in on public dances.
