Explosives Experts Train in Tunnel Hill for Raven’s Challenge
Tunnel Hill, GA (WDEF) — Explosives experts from across the country gathered in Tunnel Hill this week for Raven’s Challenge, a high-intensity training event hosted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The exercise is designed to prepare both military and civilian bomb technicians for real-world explosive threats.
The week-long training featured 18 unique scenarios, simulating everything from suspicious packages to large-scale incidents like post-active shooter situations where multiple explosive devices are involved. Each scenario required coordination between multiple teams under time-sensitive conditions.
“This training gives bomb technicians and military personnel a chance to work side by side to solve complex explosive threats,” said Greg Smith, Law Enforcement Trainer Specialist. “It’s all about real-life scenarios that test both skill and coordination.”
The media was invited on-site to observe demonstrations of the high-tech tools used in the field. Bomb technicians showed how they use advanced robotics and remote systems to approach and neutralize dangerous devices safely.
“One example involves a school scenario where explosives are left behind after a shooting,” a trainer explained. “Multiple squads are needed to clear the area, which means they not only have to manage their internal command structures but also work together to handle multiple threats quickly.”
Military officials emphasized the importance of the exercise, calling it a key opportunity for collaboration.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for all my soldiers to train alongside other military units and public safety bomb squads,” said a U.S. Army captain. “It allows for the exchange of ideas, techniques, and tools that strengthen everyone involved.”
Raven’s Challenge is held at different locations each year and remains one of the few events that brings military and civilian bomb squads together in such realistic and complex training environments.
