Stroke Awareness Saves Precious Time

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Stroke is one of the most serious medical emergencies in the United States, striking without warning and often leaving a lifetime of impact.

It’s the fifth leading cause of death and the number one cause of long-term adult disability.

But the good news is, stroke is treatable and, in many cases, preventable. The key is recognizing the signs early and taking fast action.

Health experts urge everyone to remember the acronym BE FAST.

B is for balance—sudden loss of coordination.

E is for eyes—blurred or double vision.

F is for face—one side drooping.

A is for arms—weakness or numbness.

S is for speech—slurred or hard to understand.

T stands for time—call 911 right away.

Every minute counts.

When a stroke hits, nearly two million brain cells die each minute that it goes untreated.

That’s why calling an ambulance is critical, so EMS can begin care immediately and get the patient to the right facility faster.

Stroke doesn’t discriminate, and it can happen to anyone.

But knowing the signs and acting quickly can save a life and prevent permanent damage.
