IRONMAN cancelling swim portion, but will race over Walnut Street Bridge

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Weather has once again intervened in another IRONMAN competition.

IRONMAN 70.3 officials they are cancelling the swimming part of the triathlon for safety reasons.

The flow rate of the Tennessee River could hit 50,000 cubic feet per second on Sunday, which is more than double the normal speed at Ross’s Landing.

That would prevent safety assets from holding their positions.

So now, the race begins with a bike time trial at 7:10 AM:

Race Day Updates:
5:30 AM – Transition Area Open (New Transition Time)
7:10 AM – Pro Time Trial Start
7:45 AM – Approximate Age Group Time Trial Start

The full IRONMAN had to cancel the swim event last September because of flooding from Hurricane Helene.

This weekend, the foot race will include the Walnut Street Bridge which has been closed to the public for renovation.

The city is opening it up for racers, staff and police.

Police officers will be stationed at either end to make sure only IRONMAN participants enter.

The public is encouraged to cheer on the runners on the rest of the course, but not the bridge.
