UPDATE: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the deceased individual in this incident as 21 year old Alricko Trimble Jr.
They say the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Friday evening in Hamilton Place Mall’s parking lot and surrounding roads as Chattanooga Police Officers attempted to make contact with three people including Trimble.
The TBI adds one of the other passengers in that vehicle was hospitalized and has since been realized.
No one else was hospitalized in the incident.
The TBI’s investigation was requested by Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp, who will receive the TBI’s findings to make a decision whether or not deadly force was justified in this incident.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A suspect is dead following a police chase outside of Hamilton Place Mall Friday afternoon.
Chattanooga Police Chief John Chambers says officers were patrolling outside of the mall when they noticed a person acting in a “suspicious manner”.
He says after they developed probable cause to conduct a traffic stop, that suspect fled from them and a pursuit initiated.
Chief Chambers says speeds in the chase reached over 100 miles per hour despite the chase remaining in the mall’s parking lot and the ring road surrounding the mall.
He says the suspect began crashing into other vehicles, and then near the Olive Garden on Hamilton Place Boulevard, attempted to ram into officers.
That’s when officers fired upon that suspect, killing him.
“Today is an example of how actions of criminals in our community can lead to something like that. I’m very thankful none of our officers were injured. It’s tragic that a member of our community had to pass, but this type of behavior is not going to be acceptable in the city of Chattanooga or in Hamilton County,” Chief Chambers said.
There are now two Chattanooga Police Officers on administrative leave as the TBI is investigating the incident.
There were two other people in the suspect’s car, and charges are pending against them.
There were a few other minor injuries, but nothing serious.
