Randall Smith is Laid to Rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery
The funeral for Petty Officer Randall Smith took place at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fort Oglethorpe.
Hundreds of motorcycles, with riders from all over the region, waited hours to follow Smith’s hearse to his final resting place at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
"I look at all these motorcycles here and I know how they’ve been here half the day," said Christie Boatwright from Ringgold, Ga. "Everyone out here is burning up but I think our military goes through that every day so we can stand a little but of heat to show our respect."
The Patriot Guard, a national motorcycle group that honors fallen veterans, brought dozens of bikers to support the procession.
"I just can’t express what an honor it is for us to be here just to stand for this man that gave his life," said James Wood from Memphis who is a captain with the Patriot Guard. "Him and the other four. Such a tragedy but it’s an honor for us to be here."
The motorcade with hundreds of motorcycles and dozens of police cars followed Smith to the national cemetery.
The road was flanked the entire route on both sides with supporters from all over the country waving flags.
Many of the bikers rode at Marine Staff Sergeant David Wyatt’s funeral on Friday.
"I’m 77 and Friday was probably the most thrilling thing I’ve seen in my life," said biker Howard neely from Rossville. "Just to watch the people lined up from the church all the way to the cemetery. I don’t think there was one block where there weren’t people out there. And flags all over the place. It brought tears to my eyes."
Scattered storms and soaring temperatures didn’t keep the thousands of supporters from saying a final good bye to this devoted, father, husband…and Navy hero.
