Fire crews knock down Chattanooga house fire

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Late Saturday afternoon, firefighters responded to a house fire in Chattanooga, where several neighbors watched as the Chattanooga Fire Department worked to put out the flames.

News 12 spoke with neighbors and the fire captain to learn more about what happened.

Aylea Moore and Quintis McCaleb were among those who saw the fire on Sheridan Court.

McCaleb said, “The neighbors were talking about how it could have been a grill, somebody grilling out, and I was like, no, that’s not a grill. That’s black smoke, that’s a house.”

Moore added, “I saw the black smoke go up and yelled, then called 911. Everyone started coming out, and we didn’t know if they knew anybody who lived in that house or not.”

Just after four o’clock, neighbors say they saw smoke coming from the home and called for help.

McCaleb said, “A car that was there was supposed to be there. I don’t know if somebody was at home or not. I heard from another witness that there was someone screaming for help, but I haven’t seen anyone come out of the house since firefighters arrived. I saw EMTs go inside, and it took about thirty-five to forty minutes before they came back out, so I don’t know if anyone was in the house.”

Captain Dusty Rose with the Chattanooga Fire Department said crews arrived quickly after receiving several calls.

“We got an alarm for a reported house fire with multiple calls and smoke seen from all around town. Engine 4 got here pretty quick and confirmed we had a working fire,” Rose said. “We also had reports that there was possibly someone trapped inside, so we upgraded our response to a second alarm, as per protocol.”

Firefighters found smoke inside the home but not much fire.

“We did a quick attack inside and found that there wasn’t really any fire inside. The fire was actually something out back that had gotten into the attic,” Rose said. “They checked the house and confirmed nobody was home. Thankfully, we had the fire under control in about fifteen minutes.”

No one was hurt, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
