Toys for Tots and Scenic Community Credit Union host toy drive

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As the season of giving continues, Toys for Tots is collecting gift donations for children who may not have something to open otherwise.

News 12 spoke with representatives from Toys for Tots and Scenic Community Credit Union about teaming up this Christmas season and what the toy drive means to them and to the families they serve, all in an effort to ensure every child has a gift waiting on Christmas morning.

Volunteers with the United States Marine Corps say the work they do during this time of year stays with them long after the holidays end.

Sergeant Daniel Mallett remembers how his involvement began.

“When I first participated in it, I did not really know what it was,” he said. “I was just like, okay, sure, I just want to do this. And it turned into something that I actually enjoyed because you get to see kids so happy and full of joy. Some are even crying because this is the only toy they are going to get for Christmas.”

For many Marines, connecting with families through this program is a powerful reminder of why the mission matters.

Sergeant Hailey Fowler is serving her second year with Toys for Tots and says the experience continues to inspire her.

“One of the things I enjoy most is giving back to the community and seeing the happy faces of the children,” Fowler said.

She also wants families to know that Toys for Tots supports children of all ages, not just younger ones.

“A lot of families look at Toys for Tots for the younger children, but the older children are incorporated into Toys for Tots behind the scenes and that is what a lot of families do not see,” she said. “We go out to Ollie’s and purchase toys for the older children to help them feel better.”

From the credit union’s perspective, the need in the community continues to grow.

Jourdan Reyes, Director of Marketing and Communications, says that as a mother, she recognizes what many parents in the community may struggle with during the holiday season.

“Right now, things are really hard, and parents are having to make decisions,” Reyes said. “Are we looking for food to put on the table or toys under the tree. We are glad that we are able to help support those who need it so they can provide both.”

Marketing Specialist Kensley Mace says they are excited to welcome the community to their donation event.

“We will actually be at our location tomorrow, December third,” Mace said. “If you want to come drop by and donate, come say hi. We would love to see you.”

News 12 will also be accepting donations at the station during business hours from now through December tenth.

Scenic Community Credit Union’s Hixson branch is located at 4503 Hixson Pike in Hixson, Tennessee.
