Sheriff announces new jail medication program

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tennessee (WDEF) – Sheriff Austin Garrett is launching a new Medication program at the Jail.

It’s been two years in the making.

The program treats inmates with substance abuse disorders.

They will provide FDA-approved drugs along with counseling and therapy to the prisoners.

“With the rising number of individuals entering our jails struggling with opioid addiction and mental health challenges, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is pursuing innovative approaches to enhance the health and safety of those in our custody” says Sheriff Garrett.

Sheriff’s officials say such treatment programs reduce drug use and overdoses.

They say both judges and sheriffs report fewer inmates returning to jail and more of them staying in their treatment courts.

“We’ve seen the difference this approach has made in other parts of the state, and this initiative goes hand in hand with our commitment to deploy opioid abatement funds in innovative ways that deliver proven solutions and give people a real chance at recovery.” stated Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp.
