Tennessee Bill Proposes accessible parking for pregnant women
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – State Representative Gino Bulso has filed House Bill 14-57, which would allow women in their second or third trimester, as well as those with high-risk pregnancies, to use accessible parking.
If approved, the legislation would add pregnant women to the list of individuals eligible for temporary accessible parking placards in Tennessee.
Under the proposal, qualifying pregnant women would be able to apply for a temporary disabled parking permit through a physician.
Expecting mother Sarah Weatherly says the bill could make a significant difference for women facing pregnancy complications.
“When you’re high risk, it’s a lot harder to be out in the heat for longer periods of time,” Weatherly said. “Crossing big parking lots and carrying groceries back is a lot harder, so being able to park up front is something I really appreciate.”
If the bill advances, it could be taken up when the Tennessee General Assembly reconvenes in January.
