Salvation Army hosts Christmas brunch for unhoused community

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Salvation Army of Chattanooga opened its doors this morning to host a special brunch for members of the unhoused community.

The event served up a warm plate of breakfast favorites while offering a welcoming space filled with care and connection.

News 12 spoke with Major Douglas McClure and his team about what hosting events like this means to them.

The Christmas brunch is meant to remind those who may be unhoused during the holiday season that they are loved and remembered.

Community Relations and Development Manager Kendall Hudson says seeing the effort come together is incredibly rewarding.

“Being behind the scenes, it is really wonderful,” Hudson said. “It is wonderful to see the community come together, as well as other volunteers and staff members, who all care about helping this community and giving to them.”

Guests were served biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, hash rounds, and fruit.

Coffee, water, and juice were also available.

Major Douglas McClure, Area Commander for The Salvation Army in Greater Chattanooga, says the event goes far beyond a meal.

“It gives us an opportunity to give dignity, a sense of family, and a sense of community for people that may not necessarily have those for themselves,” McClure said.

Before leaving, guests received backpacks filled with essential items such as hygiene kits, socks, hand warmers, gloves, and other comfort items.

Hudson says moments like these reflect the heart of the organization.

“Being able to love on them and make them feel safe and happy during this time is really what we’re all about,” Hudson said.

Major McClure adds that the Salvation Army’s mission continues long after the holiday season ends.

“We’re open year-round,” McClure said. “If you have somebody that needs assistance, whether it’s homelessness assistance, rent and utility help, or just someone to talk to, McCallie is here for you. We’re here at 800 McCallie Ave, to serve.”

Major McClure and his team say events like this make them proud, as they work to ensure everyone in Chattanooga’s unhoused community knows they are valued, cared for, and never forgotten during the holidays.
