Who killed the MTSU Professor last month?

SMITHVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – Who killed the MTSU professor?

It has been more than a month and investigators still have not filed charges in her death.

Did the man who found her kill her?

Or was it self defense?

Nick Beres of WTVF TV has more information on the case.

41-year old Ashleigh McKinzie was a Sociology professor at Middle Tennessee State University.

She was renting a home on Center Hill Lake east of Nashville, when police were called to a shooting in the early morning hours.

They found Professor McKinzie had been shot several times.

She had a loaded handgun that was cocked beside her body.

27 year old Todd Stanton was on the scene when officers arrived with a handgun of his own.

He had called the authorities.

Stanton says he was driving to work when he came across McKinzie standing in the road with a gun.

He said she pointed it at him so he shot her.

He has cooperated with the investigation and has not been charged… yet.

The TBI has been conducting the investigation, and their report with an autopsy and toxicology, is due this week.

The District Attorney will make the final call on whether to file any charges.
