Report: Spain will train for their World Cup matches in Chattanooga
They will actually play opening round matches in Atlanta, but practice here at Baylor School
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – There is a report that a top soccer contender in the World Cup has chosen to train in Chattanooga.
Sports Illustrated Mexico reports the team from Spain has chosen to stay and train at Baylor School before their matches in Atlanta.
The report says the Spanish team evaluated three options in the Atlanta area, including the facilities for the Atlanta United.
But they chose the more remote site two hours away at Baylor.
The team would actually stay at the Read House hotel.
Spain will play opening round matches against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, before moving on to the next round in Mexico.
Local officials are not confirming the deal.
And there is no word at this point on whether local fans will be allowed to watch the practices.
Mayor Kelly’s office would only issue this statement today:
“Chattanooga is honored to be considered as a Team Base Camp. While we are excited for the potential opportunity, nothing is official at this time.”
