Troopers Urge Caution as Snow and Ice Impact Area Roads
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)Snow and ice are creating dangerous driving conditions across the Chattanooga area, keeping Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers busy as winter weather moves through the region.
Troopers say slowing down and preparing ahead of time can make all the difference on slick roads, especially as freezing temperatures increase the risk of black ice.
According to TDOT Sergeant Willis Moore, many crashes happen when drivers panic after hitting an icy patch.
“When they hit some black ice or a slick spot, that fear kicks in and they want to steer out of it,” Moore said. “Really, you should let off the gas and allow the steering wheel to correct itself and guide you back on your path. A lot of it comes down to driver inexperience in inclement weather.”
Troopers are also urging drivers to make sure their vehicles are winter-ready before heading out. That includes warming up the car, clearing ice and snow from the windshield, and making sure visibility is not obstructed.
“What you don’t want is an additional element of danger that you can control,” Moore said. “Using your defroster, a scraper, and making sure your windshield is clear is key. Also make sure you have proper gas levels and tires that are inflated and equipped for winter conditions.”
In case of an emergency, troopers recommend keeping a winter kit in the car, including blankets, water, a flashlight, and a phone charger.
Authorities continue to remind drivers to take their time, reduce speed, and remain alert as winter weather impacts roads across the area.
