Health Risks During Extreme Cold
Hixson, TN (WDEF)-An excessive cold warning remains in effect across Middle Tennessee through Tuesday, and health experts are urging residents to take extra precautions, especially if they take certain medications.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says drugs such as sedatives and some antidepressants can affect the body’s ability to regulate heat, increasing the risk of hypothermia. Other medications, including beta blockers for blood pressure, diuretics, and stimulant medications like Adderall or Ritalin, may also make hands and feet more susceptible to cold or contribute to dehydration.
Phil Smith of Access Family Pharmacy advises, “Those taking these medications need to be aware of the added risks. Staying warm and hydrated is key.”
Health officials recommend checking with your doctor or pharmacist to understand how your medications may interact with extreme cold and taking extra precautions outdoors, including layering clothing and limiting exposure.
