Fake website poses as Chattanooga auto dealer to scam car buyers

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) is urging everyone to think twice before buying a car online, after recently discovering a phony auto sales website.

The fake website is currently posing as a real company that’s already based in Chattanooga named TM Auto Sales. The phony website is even using the real dealer’s address to lure in unsuspecting car buyers, who then later discover it’s a scam and the car  they purchased never actually existed.

"I would suggest never pay for anything site unseen, ever," said Jonathan Barrett, store manager of Maxi Auto Service. Barrett said scams like this are pretty common, which is why buyers should be extremely careful when it comes to purchasing a car online.

"Just figuring out a way to protect yourself," said Barrett, "There’s several forms online where you can research and find out things."

Barrett also suggests asking sellers to test drive or see the car before sending a check in the mail, "Seeing is believing. I mean it’s always better to be able to drive something and know what you’re dealing with. Never pay for anything before you get it."

The real TM Auto Sales has been in business since 2008, with no complaints filed against them and no official website online.
