Term Limits resolution for Hamilton County mayor, commissioners, introduced
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A resolution that would create a referendum on term limits in Hamilton County government was formally introduced Wednesday.
If passed, voters would get to choose whether or not both the Hamilton County Mayor and commissioners would be term limited to 12 years.
Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp first proposed the idea last year as a way to ensure fresh ideas are being presented.
Some commissioners voiced concern over whether the resolution could give the state government too much power over the Commission’s affairs, as they would run the referendum vote.
However, Mayor Wamp argued it should go to the voters.
He said, “It would be a shame I think if voters don’t get to speak to it at all because I think we all know what voters would say.”
The Hamilton County Commission will vote on this resolution next week.
