Phone ban, Fani Willis bill and tampon tax holiday bills in Georgia

ATLANTA (WDEF) – We’ve got updates on three issues that Georgia lawmakers are dealing with this legislative session.

First, the Georgia Senate has passed a bill cracking down on prosecutors.

Lt. Governor Burt Jones says it gives a state commission more tools to make “District Attorneys like Fani Willis accountable.”

“For too long, a handful of prosecutors have acted as if they are above the law, picking and choosing which statutes to enforce based on their own political agendas. Our efforts send a clear message: in Georgia, no one is above the law. We are restoring the boundary between personal politics and public duty.”

Another bill tackles cell phones in schools.

Last year, lawmakers banned them in elementary and middle schools.

This year, the sponsor wants to extend the ban to high schools.

Rep Scott Hilton brought a black pouch that some schools use and put his own phone in it while he spoke.

He joked that last year, several fellow lawmakers called and texted him while he spoke just to embarrass him.

Students would have to hand over their phones from bell-to bell.

It applies to cell phones, tablets, smartwatches and headphones.

And finally, lawmakers are considering a new sales tax holiday.

This would be for feminine hygiene products.

If it passes, the state would eliminate sales tax four times a year on menstrual products.
