Chattanooga Iranian American shares perspective Strike on Iran
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As protests continue across the country following the recent strike on Iran, Iranian Americans nationwide are reacting to the growing tensions.
News 12 spoke with one local man from Chattanooga who has ties in both countries.
David Khataei, who was born and raised in Iran, described the difficult conditions facing people there.
Khataei said, “The conditions of life is made difficult over there, and people are at the point that they don’t have any hope with the current regime. So, they are willing to risk everything and accept the risk of war in the hope that there will be a change and it will have positive themselves.”
He explained his background and connection to both countries.
Khataei said, “I was born and raised in Tehran. I lived over in Iran for 21 years and I moved here when I was 21. My parents moved here before I did when I was a teenager.”
He then explained that having ties to both nations gives him a unique and sometimes complicated perspective on the conflict.
“I do believe the president should have seek for approval from Congress, but it doesn’t surprise me that he didn’t. On the other hand, as an Iranian, I’m happy that he didn’t, because they did have the opportunity for their operations to be successful.”
As events continue to unfold, Khataei described the moment as both hopeful and uncertain.
He said he wants American protesters to better educate themselves on the current situation and encouraged the Iranian people to remain hopeful.
“Whatever they’re chanting, I think it needs to be an educated opinion, they should learn more about people who live there and the history.”
He added, “And my messages is don’t lose hope. It’s taken 47 years for something to happen to this regime, and we never thought that they would come.”
Khataei said despite the uncertainty, he believes change may be possible and hopes both Americans and Iranians approach the moment with understanding and education.
