A Secret Safe Place for Newborns celebrates 25 years
Julie Scruggs and Paloma Stansell join News 12’s Amelia Greer with a reminder of what comfort they provide for newborns in the state. The TN Safe Haven Law went into effect several years ago, and has made a way for parents to safely surrender their newborn without fear of prosecution. The two women speak on the impact of their organization and how they provide resources to counties across Tennessee.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) A Secret Safe Place for Newborns is a non-profit in Tennessee that works to end newborn abandonment by educating everyone on safe and secretive options under the TN Safe Haven Law.
The non-profit came about after an incident in the foudner’s hometown where a young teen girl concealed her pregnancy, had the baby, and hid the newborn in a toolshed. The two co-founders then aided in creating the Safe Haven Law which allows mothers in crisis to surrender their unharmed baby within 45 days of birth, without prosecution.
A Secret Safe Place for Newborns celebrates 25 years of their service, which now expands to 1500 facilities across the state, 60 of them in Hamilton County.
