Deadly Nightclub Shooting Trial Continues

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The night of January 31, 2021, began like any other outside the Night Owl nightclub in Chattanooga.

But the evening ended in tragedy when 28-year-old Kenneth Trammell Jr. was shot and killed. More than five years later, the case is finally in court.

32-year-old Melvin Evans faces first-degree murder charges in connection with Trammell’s death.

On Wednesday, jurors watched surveillance video and Chattanooga Police 360-degree cameras, capturing the moments surrounding the shooting.

The lead detective, Zack Crawford, on the case, testified, describing what was visible on the footage. The scenes brought visible reactions in the courtroom, a stark reminder of the life lost that night.

Crawford also testified that 40 caliber and 9-millimeter shell casings were recovered at the scene, indicating multiple weapons may have been fired.

He said roughly 12 to 30 shots rang out, though echoes made it difficult to determine an exact number. He also identified a green Ford Focus connected to Evans during the incident.

Evidence from Evans’ residence obtained through a search warrant was presented, including clothing the detective said matched what was worn the night of the shooting.

Phone records were also mentioned, with testimony noting that location data can vary depending on the carrier.

The defense presented a map to jurors and questioned details about the sequence of events, emphasizing the chaotic nature of that night.

The trial is ongoing as the court continues to review evidence and testimony in a case that has left the community remembering Kenneth Trammell Jr. and the tragic night that ended his life.
