The Chattery celebrates reopening and new ownership milestone

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Chattery celebrated its reopening this weekend, marking not only a return to its space but also a major milestone in now owning its building.

Community members gathered to recognize the organization’s growth and resilience following a devastating setback.

The nonprofit is reopening after a fire destroyed its previous space, resulting in a total loss.

Co-founder Shawanda Mason said the journey back has been a long one.

“In 2024, during our 10th anniversary, our original space was set on fire and destroyed due to arson. We spent almost two years rebuilding and figuring out our next steps. We relocated to Broad Street and hosted classes there for a little over a year,” Mason explained.

Now, Mason said, the organization has come full circle.

“It is so beautiful to be back in the space where we started, and now we own the building, which is especially meaningful for our nonprofit. We started with one hundred dollars in 2014, and now we are in a position where we own our space. It is really incredible to see that full circle moment,” Mason said.

Co-founder Jennifer Holder said The Chattery has always focused on creating a welcoming space for the entire community.

“From the beginning, we wanted to be a community hub for the entire city and the metro area. We want people to come and learn with us,” Holder said.

She added that their mission is centered on helping people explore new interests and discover parts of themselves they may not have tapped into before.

“People deserve the opportunity to discover different parts of themselves they may have never met before. As adults, we do not always get those opportunities, and that is why we exist,” Holder said.

The Chattery continues to offer classes and opportunities for people to learn new skills, connect with others, and grow.

Organizers encourage anyone with an idea or hobby they would like to explore to submit a request.
