Trial in 2023 Chattanooga murder case delayed again
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The trial of an ex-Chattanooga cop charged with the murder of his girlfriend has been delayed again.
Lawrence Goodine is facing a first degree murder charge in the November 2023 death of Kara Akins on Carr Street.
Footage shown at previous shows a man identified as Goodine dragging Akins into a home as she was begging him to stop.
He had previously been acquitted of abuse as a police officer in 2008.
Thursday, Goodine’s defense attorney, Neil Pinkston, requested that his trial, which was supposed to occur later this month, be delayed due to a scheduling conflict with a separate federal case.
Hamilton County Judge Barry Steelman granted that request, something that prosecutor Paul Moyle protested.
Moyle said, “The defendant has a right to a speedy trial, but the state also has a right to a fast and speedy trial. This is the second time the case has been continued.”
That trial has been rescheduled for August.
