CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-  The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees has approved a land deal concerning Engel Stadium.

UTC, who has owned the historic stadium since 2008, is transferring over an acre of the stadium site on 3rd Street to Hamilton County so they can build a new health department building.

Erlanger plans to take over the current health department when they move.

The hospital in the agreement has given two parcels of land to the university, who says will be used to address a key issue on campus.

UTC Chancellor Dr. Lori Mann Bruce said, “One of the things that we are working on long-term is finding more economical parking for in particular faculty and staff, but also our students. So this falls into a long-term plan to have more satellite parking.”

The stadium is planned to be demolished due to its poor state and redeveloped into a new women’s soccer stadium.

It is unclear when Engel Stadium will be demolished, which has prompted backlash from some in the community.
