Mother celebrates special Mother’s Day as a bonus mom to students far from home

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As we continue celebrating Mother’s Day weekend, one mother we met at the Chattanooga Market says this year is especially meaningful, as she is not only a mother to her biological son, but also a bonus mom to two young men far from home.

As the Chattanooga community celebrated Mother’s Day weekend, News 12 stopped by the market to see the beautiful gifts and handmade items being offered for moms on their special day.

One vendor, Natalie Stendardo with Lolly Lou’s Lux Designs, explained that her products are both beautiful and long lasting.

“I have beautiful hand painted wood florals. They last forever, no wilting, no water, especially for those monsters, can’t keep anything alive, just like me,” she said.

We also spoke with Lauren Hodges, who explained that this Mother’s Day feels extra special because she has embraced the role of bonus mom to two basketball players attending Hamilton Heights Christian Academy.

“Essentially, my bonus kids are basketball players at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy here, but I connected with the team, and I connected with the boys. Really just to be a support system for them because they are from Paris, Canada, South Sudan. And so, these kids haven’t seen their mom. And so, being able to just be a present person, know what I’m saying? Like, throughout their basketball season, show up for them, be at the game, travel with them to the game, like, for them to know that they have somebody here. It’s like I’m just taking them all in as my kids, you know?”

One of those young men, Adam Barrouk, stated that being away from home can be difficult, but he is thankful for the support Hodges has provided throughout the year.

“Of course. Well, I’m most thankful for the support, just for being here all year. I know I’m far from home, so just having somebody here supporting me, and if you need help, I know she’s there, so I’m very grateful for that. Love her.”

Hodges elaborated that while motherhood can sometimes be challenging, it is also incredibly rewarding.

“I know that it’s hard. I know that it’s frustrating sometimes. I know that these kids get on our nerves, but at the end of the day, it’s for them and for them to be better people, for them to make the world a better place, and know that you’re doing that every time you show up, every meal that you cook, every book that you give, every time that they’re able to lean on you. You’re making the world a better place. Our future is greater because of you as a mom.”
