YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga is launching its Summer Food Program

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – With summer right around the corner, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga is launching its Summer Food Program to help provide free meals for children across the Tennessee and North Georgia area.

“I used to eat these meals when I was at day camp back in 2010 at the downtown YMCA.”

That was William Tony, now a staff member and former recipient of the YMCA Summer Food Program.

“I love doing this every day because it’s good for the community,” Tony explained.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga is once again partnering with the USDA to provide free meals for children throughout Tennessee and North Georgia during the summer months.

Paula Irwin, executive director of the J.A. Henry Community YMCA, says the goal of the program is to ensure children up to 18 years old have access to nutritious meals while school is out.

“We have an entrée packed with each meal that could include a sandwich, a salad, or a wrap,” Irwin elaborated. “Every meal also includes a fruit, a vegetable, a grain, a protein, and milk.”

Staff members explained that the meals are free of charge and available across the Tennessee and North Georgia region.

“So, you know, some kids do not always go home to have a good meal,” staff member Zackariah Suttles stated. “It is always good to help out in any way you can for kids in need.”

The City of Chattanooga’s partnership with organizations like the USDA has helped serve more than 400,000 meals annually while working to reduce food insecurity across the area.

“We know that we are providing a really important resource for families who are struggling,” Irwin said. “Not every YMCA in the country is able to do this, so we are grateful to be part of this work during the summer. It is hot work and hard work, but we are excited to do it.”

Team member Anna Brooke also thanked volunteers and staff for their efforts.

“Thank you, everyone, for coming in. I hope you like this on TV, and I love you, Mom and Dad,” she said with a smile.

The program will continue through early August, providing meals and support for families throughout the summer break.
