First Responder Hero Award: Captain Matt Cole

DADE COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) – News 12 is recognizing some of the bravest members of our community through the First Responder Hero Award.

Whether they serve as EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, or police officers, the award honors the unwavering dedication these first responders show every day to keep the community safe. When danger strikes, they are the first to answer the call. Now, it is our turn to put them first.

In partnership with Wettermark Keith, News 12 is proud to spotlight these courageous individuals.

This month, the community nominated Captain Matt Cole with the Dade County Sheriff’s Office.

Cole has dedicated nearly three decades to law enforcement, serving in a variety of roles throughout his career.

He said his passion for the profession began at a young age, inspired by his father, who also served as a police officer.

Cole recalled spending time at the sheriff’s office with his father and dreaming of one day wearing the badge himself.

“It’s the cliché, but this is all I’ve ever wanted to do,” Cole said. “Growing up, my father was a police officer. I remember having a patrol car outside and getting to go to the office with Dad for as long as I can remember.”

Before his mother’s passing, Cole said she gave him a childhood book that asked what he wanted to be when he grew up.

Among a list of professions, he had selected police officer.

In August, Cole will celebrate 30 years of service.

He began his career working in the jail before moving into patrol and eventually serving in numerous specialized assignments.

Throughout his career, he has worked in narcotics, served as a K9 handler, conducted interstate interdiction operations, and worked with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force.

Today, he serves as captain of the patrol division.

Cole explained that helping people has always been the most rewarding part of the job.

“The biggest problem we’ve seen throughout much of my career has been drugs,” he explained. “When you finally have those breakthroughs and somebody gets clean and becomes a productive citizen, that’s the best.”

While the profession can be challenging, Cole praised how the support of his family has helped him navigate the difficult moments that come with the job.

“I’ve got a great wife who supports me, and in this line of work, you really need a great partner. Not only is she my best friend, she’s my partner.”

Cole added that spending time with his children and grandchildren is what he looks forward to most on his days off.

For those considering a career in law enforcement, the captain offered simple advice.

“If you’re coming into this to make money, don’t even come into it,” he stated. “If you truly care about your community and want to help people, then this is the job for you.”

Cole said he is grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Dade County and hopes to continue doing so for years to come.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to serve this county for my entire career. I hope to keep doing that for many more years.”

News 12 is honored to recognize Captain Matt Cole for his years of service and commitment to protecting the community.
