Bessie Smith Cultural Center hosts the 2026 Big Nine Music Fest
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The community came together as the Bessie Smith Cultural Center hosted the 2026 Big 9 Music Fest.
The free event celebrated the legacy and culture of Chattanooga’s Historic Big Nine, once known nationwide as “The Big 9” for its influence on music, business, and African American culture.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed live entertainment while learning about the artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who helped shape the history of East Ninth Street.
James McCallie, better known as DJ Augie, said the event represents the values that bring communities together.
“What this means to me is love, family, and togetherness. Music is the universal language. It speaks to everybody.”
Paula Wilkes, president of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, stated that preserving the history of the Big Nine remains an important part of the organization’s mission.
“We are excited to welcome families, visitors, and music lovers from across the region for this free event that continues to honor and preserve that history.”
Organizers said the festival not only celebrates Chattanooga’s rich musical heritage but also ensures future generations can learn about the impact the Historic Big Nine had on the city and beyond.
