New Cleveland Chief of Police is Announced

"Do what’s right and do what you’re paid to do."

That’s the mission of the new city of Cleveland Chief of Police who is taking over after the department has faced scandal after scandal the past few years.

"I hope we can get the department going and back on track and make the changes that we need to make," said the new police chief Mark Gibson.

And what changes is the new chief talking about?

"We’re working with the city manager and the city council to improve some of our policies to help us to strengthen our disciplinary process that will deter unfavorable behavior from our officers," Gibson said.

From philandering officers caught in love triangles, accusations of sexting between cops and the most recent charge of arson placed against one Cleveland policeman, Gibson is most certainly walking into a department desperate for strong leadership.

"The biggest challenge is not really getting a clean slate. I’m going to inherit alot of issues that are going to be dealt with up front. I’m going to have alot of eyes on me to see how I deal with those issues."

Gibson promises a new level of accountability within the department and transparency with the public.

"We’re not going to hide them in the closet," Gibson said. "We’re going to put them out in front and let people know what’s going on and how we’re dealing with it. I know we have the officers that will do a good job and the only mission I have is do what’s right and do what’s you’re paid to do."

Chief Gibson takes over Monday and will take the official oath of office on Wednesday, September 28th.
