CCS Hopes to Finish Out Their Season With a Region Title
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Last year Chattanooga Christian made the playoffs for the first time in school history.
This year they’ve already secured a post-season berth.
And tonight, the Chargers can add a region championship to their list of accomplishments.
A few weeks before the season started, Chattanooga Christian hit the road for Camp Skyline for something more than a summer football camp.
Said quarterback Matthew Mercer-"Our team bonded a lot at that camp. We didn’t just do football at that camp. We did a lot of different spiritual bonding."
The Chargers were tested soon after camp in their season opener as they rallied to beat Brainerd 24-21.
Said linebacker Nick Fulmer-"A lot of people probably thought we were done. But we came back and scored with like a minute left or less than that. I don’t really remember."
Matthew Mercer was the trigger man on that drive, and the Chargers quarterback has an interesting nickname.
Chuckles Fulmer-"We call him biceps."
Mr. Biceps for a quarterback that weighs 150-pounds.
Mercer-"The first thing you do when you get on the field is look how you compare to other people physically. Obviously, I’m nothing big, but I just focus on the details and the little things."
Said head coach Rob Spence-"He’s really a lot of fun to coach. Very high football IQ. You can teach him. He takes coaching. He’s very attentative to what you are talking about."
Last week, the CCS offense scored 76 points against Grace. The week before, their defense threw a shut-out against Red Bank. So which performance impressed Coach Spence the most?
"When you play well on defense, you always have a chance to win a ballgame. As much as I love offense, I know the heart and soul of your football team is built on the defensive side of the ball."
The Chargers are excited to play for a region title tonight against East Ridge.
Fulmer"We weren’t picked to do very well before the season. It has been kind of cool to surprise everybody."
