UPDATE: Search for Missing South Pittsburg Woman In Flood Water Called Off

It’s not clear why Alice Reynolds of South Pittsburg entered a fast moving and flooded creek Christmas morning, leaving her shoes on the creek bank.

But one thing is clear.

She didn’t come out and has been missing ever since.

"She had her dinner cooking in the oven at home," said South Pittsburg police chief Robert Simpson. "I’m sure she just probably went out to see what was going on, saw the rushing water, maybe wanted to step into it and it swept her away."

Neighbors said fast moving water completely covered 3rd Avenue Christmas Day.

"I just walked off my porch and took a video of it," said Brian Blevins of South Pittsburg. "I would have been scared to step off my porch. I guess everything coming off that mountain right there at the end of the street, wide open just raging water."

Emergency medical crews including the Chattanooga Fire Department actually went under 3rd Avenue into the storm sewer to search for Reynolds Monday.

Search efforts began Saturday because the water currents were too strong Friday.

"We’ve got a mile long drainage culvert that these creeks empty in to and go underneath the highway and so they’re here now and their searching the culvert so we can make sure she’s not trapped in the culvert underneath the street," Simpson said.

At 12:45 Monday, Simpson told News 12 the search was called off and their plan was now to "wait and see" meaning when the flood waters recede, they assume Reynolds body will be found more easily.
