Pastor Protection Act Unanimously passes through the GA House of Representatives
House Bill 757 or better known as the Pastor Protection Act was a somewhat controversial topic that saw major push back from the L-G-B-T-Q organizations.
But despite the push back, the Georgia House of Representatives voted to pass the bill by a large majority.
State Representative Tom Weldon said “Both parties to vote unanimously for it, that is very unusual.”
The Pastor Protection Act is modeled on similar legislation in several other states…
“This bill just puts into state law what is already provided by the constitution of the United States and the Georgia constitution.”
The bill assures clergy that they will not be required to perform any marriage which violates their faith. It further protects churches, synagogues and other places of worship, as well as religious organizations from being required by state or local government to host an event which violates their religious doctrine.
“Frankly, I don’t think this bill goes far enough. I think if we are going to make a protected class for churches and pastors, then we have to be careful how we do that, because if we are going to live by the law of the constitution, I think that has to be applied equally among all people.”
With the support the Pastor Protection Act has in the house, there may be similar religious protection bills on the way.
“I believe there will be other bills that reflect this.”
